Harvey launches Tenet, a legal AI model built on China's Kimi K3

Legal AI platform Harvey has launched Tenet, its first proprietary language model specifically designed for legal work. The model is built by post-training on the weights of Kimi K3, an open-source model developed by the Chinese company Moonshot AI.

Tenet is intended to allow law firms to perform tasks such as document review, contract drafting, and legal research using their own weights rather than relying indefinitely on third-party APIs. However, the decision to build a proprietary model for legal professionals—who handle privileged information—on top of a Chinese open-source base has raised questions regarding data privacy and confidentiality.

The emergence of Kimi K3 highlights a narrowing gap in the global AI race. Developed by Moonshot AI, the model has reached performance benchmarks comparable to leading American models from OpenAI and Anthropic. As an open-weights model, Kimi K3 allows organizations to deploy and adapt the technology without sharing data with the original developer, signaling increased competition from Chinese firms in the frontier AI space.
