Karnataka sugarcane farmers hold statewide protests over pricing

Sugarcane farmers across Karnataka have launched a statewide protest, including a bandh, to demand a higher purchase price for sugarcane. Protesters, organized under banners such as the Karnataka Rajya Raitha Sangha, are seeking a price of ₹5,500 per tonne, significantly higher than the current fair and remunerative price of ₹3,650 at 10.25% recovery.

The demonstrations have led to significant disruptions, including road blockades on national highways and bus service interruptions in districts such as Belagavi, Dharwad, Haveri, and Vijayapura. In Dharwad, authorities imposed prohibitory orders under Section 163 of the BNSS on four national highways to maintain public order. In Mandya, farmers staged a black flag protest against Chief Minister DK Shivakumar, resulting in several detentions.

Chief Minister DK Shivakumar has urged the Centre to raise the state’s sugar floor price from ₹31 to ₹41.50 per kg and has requested a review of ethanol directives. He also proposed applying the Swaminathan Commission’s C2+50% formula for cane pricing. While the government maintains it is working to protect farmers, local traders and small business owners have expressed concerns regarding the economic impact of the disruptions on daily life.
