Harz National Park reports death of three young lynxes
Three young lynxes have died in the Harz National Park in Germany, representing a significant setback for the conservation of the endangered species in Europe. The three cubs were born this spring to a female lynx named Rikki within the park's enclosure.
Staff discovered one young animal dead in its enclosure. Upon examining the two remaining siblings, experts identified severe congenital malformations of their internal organs. To prevent further suffering, a veterinarian was called to euthanize the two remaining cubs.
National Park Director Roland Pietsch described the event as a “great setback” for the park and its colleagues. The administration is currently working closely with veterinarians and pathologists to determine the exact cause of death, with a specific focus on conducting extended examinations of the breeding animals.
