Harz region sees rising popularity on TikTok and shift toward quiet destinations

The Harz mountain region in Germany is experiencing shifting tourism patterns driven by social media popularity and a desire for quieter destinations. According to an analysis by Fit Reisen, the Harz has ranked among the top ten German tourist attractions on TikTok, appearing in the top 50 European rankings as well. Popular content on the platform highlights scenic landscapes, historic half-timbered towns like Quedlinburg, and experiences such as steam train rides to the Brocken summit.

While famous sites like the Brocken and Bodetal often face overcrowding on weekends, travelers are increasingly seeking out ‘hidden gems’ to avoid the crowds. This trend favors smaller mountain villages, less-traveled hiking paths, and karst landscapes in the south. Areas such as the Oberharz towns—including Clausthal-Zellerfeld, Buntenbock, Altenau, Schulenberg, and Wildemann—have seen significant activity, recording approximately 873,600 overnight stays.

Modern travel behavior shows a preference for shorter, closer trips focused on tranquility. This shift has led to increased interest in locations like the Ahrendsberger Klippenweg near Bad Harzburg and the technical landmarks of the narrow-gauge railways in Stiege.
