Harz region sees steady tourism growth despite rising costs
The Harz region in Germany continues to see significant interest from tourists, despite rising living costs. The Harzturm, Germany’s highest observation tower in Torfhaus, has welcomed over 200,000 guests since its official opening in late 2023. While operators note that visitors are planning trips more cautiously due to economic pressures, many are opting for regional day trips as a more affordable alternative to long-distance travel.
The Brocken, the highest peak in Northern Germany at 1,141 meters, remains a central attraction. The Harz district is currently undertaking renovations in the summit area, including plans for an event and conference center in a former telecommunications building.
For outdoor enthusiasts, the region offers approximately 8,000 kilometers of marked hiking trails across Lower Saxony, Saxony-Anhalt, and Thuringia. Popular routes include the Goetheweg, known for its moderate difficulty, and various beginner-friendly paths around lakes and forests. The Harz Schmalspurbahnen also operates Europe’s longest continuous steam-powered narrow-gauge network, providing a historical transport link through the mountains.
