Turkey launches academic year with ‘Terörsüz Türkiye’ theme

Turkish universities have launched the 2026-2027 academic year under the theme ‘Terörsüz Türkiye’ (Terror-free Turkey), a topic designated by the Council of Higher Education (YÖK). Various academic leaders and political figures have used the opening lectures to discuss the socio-economic and educational implications of ending terrorism in the country.

At Karabük University, Rector Prof. Dr. Fatih Kırışık emphasized that a terror-free environment would allow the nation to redirect resources, time, and human energy from security struggles toward science, education, and economic development. Similarly, at Erzurum Technical University, Rector Prof. Dr. Bülent Çakmak noted that improved security has already positively impacted the ability of families to send children to universities in eastern regions.

In Kocaeli, Dr. Talip Emiroğlu highlighted the immense economic cost of terrorism, stating that redirected funds could significantly increase the national per capita income. Meanwhile, political figures like Kemal Abdullahoğlu of the Justice Party stressed that any process toward national unity must be conducted through the Parliament and strictly adhere to constitutional principles and the rule of law.

Additionally, YÖK President Erol Özvar addressed the academic opening of Gaza Islamic University via video link, commenting on the destruction of educational infrastructure in Gaza and the necessity of supporting Palestinian students and academics to ensure the continuity of research and education.
