Abdul El-Sayed faces Democratic backlash over ties to Hasan Piker

Michigan Democratic Senate nominee Abdul El-Sayed is facing significant internal party pressure following controversial associations with far-left Twitch streamer Hasan Piker. The tension stems from Piker’s recent comments, in which he suggested that American Jews who are singularly invested in Israel could face domestic retaliation. These remarks have drawn widespread condemnation from Democratic leadership, including House Minority Leader Hakeem Jeffries, who labeled the rhetoric ‘dangerous and antisemitic.’

In response to the backlash, El-Sayed has attempted to distance himself from the influencer, stating he has ‘no plans’ to campaign with Piker and referring to him as ‘a streamer in California.’ However, the controversy has created visible rifts within the Michigan Democratic Party. Several prominent figures, including U.S. Representative Hillary Scholten and Representative Debbie Dingell, have expressed frustration, with Dingell urging reporters to stop focusing on the matter to keep the campaign centered on issues like healthcare and the economy.

Other Democrats, such as Representative Josh Gottheimer, have called for more explicit condemnations of Piker’s views. The controversy comes as El-Sayed prepares for a tight general election race against Republican Mike Rogers, with party leaders concerned that internal disputes over Israel and antisemitism could distract from broader electoral goals.
