Hasan Piker's Mao‑style speech at College Democrats convention sparks controversy
Far‑left Twitch streamer and political commentator Hasan Piker addressed the College Democrats of America national convention at the Walter E. Washington Convention Center in Washington, DC. Dressed in a suit styled after Chinese leader Mao Zedong, Piker denounced moderate Democrats as “fascist collaborators” and praised Mao as “one of the great leaders of this world.”
The appearance provoked immediate backlash from activists and commentators. Anti‑gun‑rights activist Shannon R. Watts called Piker a “dangerous, hateful extremist,” while television personality Spencer Pratt condemned the Mao costume and alleged brain‑washing of students. A resurfaced livestream in which Piker reiterated praise for Mao added to the criticism. Piker’s prior remarks that the United States “deserved” the September 11 attacks and his barred entry from the United Kingdom were also cited in the controversy.
The incident highlights ongoing tensions within the Democratic Party between its progressive wing and more moderate members, and it has drawn significant attention on social media, with the speech video accumulating millions of views.
