Hashim Thaçi and co-defendants' closing statements scheduled for September 2026
The Special Court has set September 10, 11 and 14, 2026 for the closing statements in the case against former Kosovo prime minister Hashim Thaçi and four co‑defendants – Bashkim Smakajt, Isni Kilaj, Fadil Fazliu and Hajredin Kuçi. The indictment alleges that between July 2 and November 2 2023 Thaçi provided confidential information to Smakajt, Kilaj and Fazliu about prosecution witnesses and attempted to influence testimony, and that he arranged for Kuçi to contact witnesses in violation of court orders. Thaçi faces three counts of crimes against public order and eight counts of offenses against the administration of justice, while Smakajt, Kilaj and Fazliu each face one count of each, and Kuçi faces two counts related to the administration of justice. Kilaj was arrested, transferred to the Hague’s Specialized Chambers, and released on strict conditions in May 2024 due to procedural delays; the other three defendants were also arrested and transferred to the Hague in December 2024. Thaçi has been handed a detention order and remains in pre‑trial custody.
