Haskell Free Library faces border changes between US and Canada

The Haskell Free Library and Opera House, a historic institution situated directly on the border between Derby Line, Vermont, and Quebec, Canada, has seen the end of a century-old tradition due to new security requirements.

Inaugurated in 1901, the building was intentionally constructed across the international line to promote cooperation. The layout allows for a unique experience where the ground floor houses English and French books, and the upper-floor theater permits spectators to sit in the United States with their feet in Canada.

For over 120 years, Canadian citizens were able to use the library’s main entrance located on the American side without passing through an official border checkpoint. However, following mandates from the US federal administration to curb smuggling and illicit activities, the library was required to construct a separate entrance on the Canadian side. This new entrance was completed in June, marking the end of unrestricted access through the primary entrance.
