Hatay Metropolitan Municipality converts household waste into energy

The Hatay Metropolitan Municipality is converting household solid waste into energy at its disposal and landfill facility located in the Gökçegöz neighborhood of Antakya. The facility aims to minimize the negative impacts of methane gas on the environment and human health by capturing biogas from waste.

Currently, the facility processes an average of 1,200 tons of waste daily from nine districts, including Antakya, Defne, and Samandağ. With an installed capacity of 7 megawatts and five gas engines, the plant produces an average of 3.5 megawatts of electricity. Between April 2024 and August 2026, the facility processed approximately 1.66 million tons of waste and generated 50,763.07 MWh of electricity.

Expansion efforts are underway as part of the municipality’s 2025–2029 Strategic Plan. Construction of a new Integrated Solid Waste Disposal Facility in the Arsuz district has reached 60% completion as of August 2026, which is expected to further increase waste management and energy production capabilities in the region.
