Hatay mother dedicates life to caring for severely disabled son
Nimet Atıcı, a resident of the Defne district in Hatay, Turkey, has dedicated her life to caring for her 33-year-old son, Cengiz Atıcı, who lives with a 98 percent disability. Following the death of her husband in a traffic accident only five months into their marriage, Atıcı has acted as both mother and father to her son.
Because Cengiz is unable to walk or speak and has a tendency to harm himself, Atıcı must remain by his side constantly, which has severely limited her ability to engage in social life or leave the house. She manages all aspects of his daily care, including feeding and hygiene.
The family relies on government assistance, including disability and caregiver allowances, as well as a survivor's pension from her late husband, to meet their needs. Despite the immense physical and emotional challenges, Atıcı has refused to place her son in a care facility, citing his well-being and their deep bond.
