Hatay secures five new geographical indications for traditional foods

Five additional traditional food products from Hatay have been granted geographical indication status by the Turkish Patent and Trademark Office. These new certifications bring the total number of registered products in the province to 75.

The newly certified items include Hatay Helva Hattuş, a traditional dessert made with dried figs; Hatay Şam Tatlısı, a dessert blending Balkan and Middle Eastern influences; Antakya Sasiço, a seasoned meat product; Hatay Mortadella Yemeği, a dish influenced by early 20th-century French meat processing techniques; and Hatay Mercimekli Aşı, a dish made with green lentils and bulgur.

With these additions, Hatay now ranks third in Turkey for the number of geographically indicated products, following Gaziantep and Konya. Governor Mustafa Masatlı noted that the initiative aims to preserve the city's diverse culinary heritage and cultural values as the region continues its reconstruction efforts following the February 6 earthquakes.
