Hatillo Dam experts propose multisectoral management strategy
Experts and stakeholders have proposed a multisectoral strategy to improve the public management and conservation of the Hatillo Dam in the Cibao Oriental region. During a panel organized by the Universidad Tecnológica del Cibao Oriental (UTECO), specialists from the public, technical, and productive sectors discussed the challenges and opportunities regarding water resource management.
A key outcome of the meeting was the creation of the ‘Mesa del Agua de la Presa de Hatillo’ (Hatillo Dam Water Table). This collaborative space is designed to support state regulatory functions by conducting independent technical studies on the reservoir's condition. The initiative aims to ensure that public decisions regarding water, energy, and agricultural security are based on scientific evidence.
The administration of the dam is a shared responsibility between state agencies, including INDRHI and EGEHID. The proposed approach seeks to balance productive uses with the environmental protection of the Yuna-Camú watershed, addressing the needs of various users within the basin.
