Hato Mayor: A diverse province in eastern Dominican Republic
Hato Mayor is a province located in the eastern region of the Dominican Republic, specifically within the Higuamo region. The area is characterized by a diverse landscape that includes rivers, caves, mountains, and mangroves, serving as a gateway to the Los Haitises natural space.
Economically, the province is defined by agricultural and maritime activities, including citrus production, cacao, livestock, and fishing. According to the 2022 Census, the province has a population of 100,133 residents, with approximately three-quarters living in urban areas.
Historically, the name Hato Mayor originates from the colonial era when the territory was divided into cattle ranches (hatos). While the province was officially established on December 3, 1984, after being part of El Seibo, its history dates back to the early centuries of colonization, including participation in the National Independence and the Restoration War.
