Hattusa archaeologists discover 16 ancient storage vessels
Archaeologists have discovered 16 large storage vessels on the northwest slope of Büyükkale in Hattusa, Turkey. The find, led by archaeologist Andreas Schachner, dates back to approximately 1800–1750 BCE.
The site belongs to the era of the Assyrian trading colonies, which predates the Hittite period. The vessels were built into the slope in a terraced formation and were likely used to store agricultural products or other goods. While the containers currently hold only soil and mud, researchers plan to conduct botanical analyses to identify any remaining plant matter or stored products.
The discovery provides insight into how ancient inhabitants managed the difficult terrain of the slope before a landslide eventually destroyed the site. This find may help clarify the function of this specific area within Hattusa, a major center and former capital of the Hittite Empire.
