Germany weather: Heavy rain in southwest and drought in northeast

Germany is experiencing contrasting weather patterns across different regions. In the southwest, specifically Baden-Württemberg, the German Weather Service (DWD) has issued warnings for heavy, continuous rainfall. Areas spanning from the High Rhine and South Black Forest to the Upper Neckar and Southwest Alb could see between 35 and 50 liters of rain per square meter over a 20 to 36-hour period. While this volume does not automatically trigger flood warnings, the impact depends on soil conditions and local water levels.

In contrast, Mecklenburg-Vorpommern is facing significant drought issues. According to the Helmholtz Centre for Environmental Research, approximately 40 percent of the state is affected by moderate to severe drought, particularly in the southeast. Recent rainfall has been insufficient to replenish soil moisture at depths of up to 1.80 meters, posing challenges for agriculture and groundwater recharge.

Sachsen is also seeing a shift in weather, moving from mild conditions to cooler, cloudier skies with occasional light rain and wind gusts in the Ore Mountains over the weekend.
