Haut-Katanga road accidents claim over 30 lives

More than 30 people have died in a series of traffic accidents on the Lubumbashi-Likasi-Kolwezi road axis in Haut-Katanga over the last 10 days, according to the Congolese National Police.

Two major incidents occurred within a two-day period. On Sunday evening, a collision between an Alphard vehicle and a truck in Tumbwe resulted in at least 10 deaths. On Monday, August 10, a minibus collision near 55 caused at least 13 fatalities.

Police spokesperson Major Charles Bin Lwamba attributed the accidents to driver intoxication and the high volume of diverse vehicle types on the route. In response to the fatalities, Divisional Commissioner Blaise Kilimbalimba has ordered increased road safety measures and stricter controls to curb dangerous driving behaviors.
