Haute-Savoie drought triggers crisis restrictions and impacts UTMB

Severe drought conditions have significantly worsened in Haute-Savoie, France, following a heatwave and lack of precipitation during the first half of August 2026. As of August 20, several river basins, including the Usses, Dranses, and Chéran, have been placed in a crisis situation (level 4/4). Water levels in these areas are extremely low, with some tributaries already running dry.

Authorities have implemented strict water restrictions, limiting usage to priority needs such as drinking water, the survival of aquatic species, livestock watering, civil security, and public health.

The shortage poses logistical challenges for the upcoming UTMB trail running event. The Arve amont basin, which includes Chamonix, Vallorcine, and Le Tour, is under drought alert. This area is critical for the event, as it covers the final kilometers of the UTMB and parts of the CCC and OCC races. Organizers may have to rely heavily on official supply points to provide water for more than 10,000 runners.
