Hautes-Alpes landslide propels car into river

A landslide in the Hautes-Alpes region of France caused a car to be propelled into a river on Friday afternoon. The incident occurred at La Maison du Roy, between Aiguilles and Guillestre, when large rocks detached from a mountain overlooking the Guil valley and struck a vehicle.

The impact lifted the car and sent it ten meters down into the river. A couple was rescued from the partially submerged vehicle by a gendarmerie aerial detachment and emergency medical services.

The driver, suffering head injuries, was hospitalized in Grenoble, while the passenger, with injuries to the shoulder and thorax, was admitted to the Escartons hospital center in Briançon. Both are reported to be seriously injured, though their lives are not in immediate danger. The RD902 road has been closed to traffic following a departmental decree, with no reopening date currently scheduled.
