Hautes Fagnes wildfire investigation points to potential agricultural spark

Authorities investigating the wildfire in the Hautes Fagnes region are exploring the possibility that a spark from agricultural machinery may have caused the blaze. Video footage captured by an aircraft on August 14 shows the fire in its early stages, covering only a few dozen meters. Investigators are also considering whether a discarded cigarette could be the cause, though the fire's origin remains unconfirmed as dangerous terrain has prevented experts from the Liège prosecutor's office from conducting an on-site investigation.

Emergency services continue to manage the situation, with approximately one hundred people mobilized to combat recurring flames. Specialists from Spain and the Netherlands have provided assistance through the European aid mechanism. The area remains under surveillance and is expected to require monitoring until winter.

In a separate development, police have intercepted several individuals, including cyclists and curious onlookers, who breached security perimeters during the night. Officials warned that these unauthorized entries pose significant risks, including falling trees, smoke inhalation, and potential encounters with unexploded munitions. Such incursions also threaten to divert emergency resources away from active firefighting operations.
