Havana water supply: President Díaz-Canel evaluates mitigation strategies

Cuban President Miguel Díaz-Canel Bermúdez has met with officials from the Ministry of Energy and Mines and the National Institute of Hydraulic Resources to evaluate strategies for improving water supplies in Havana. The government is focusing on protecting 29 primary water sources and implementing measures to ensure more sustainable distribution.

Proposed solutions include the installation of electric generators, the maintenance of existing networks, and the deployment of photovoltaic renewable energy sources at locations such as El Gato, Cuenca Sur, and Ariguanabo. Minister Vicente de la O Levy stated these actions aim to reduce electrical interruptions at water sources and decrease reliance on fuel for generators.

These efforts come amid a critical situation where approximately 2.7 million Cubans face severe challenges accessing potable water. The crisis is exacerbated by electricity shortages that prevent consistent water pumping, particularly in high-rise buildings. Residents have also reported broader difficulties including shortages of essential medicines, food, and public transportation.
