Havana's William Soler Hospital Gets €12,332 from Legazpi, Spain

A humanitarian campaign in the Basque town of Legazpi raised €12,332 to fund electricity for the William Soler Pediatric University Hospital in Havana, Cuba. The effort, called “Legazpitik argia Kubara” ("From Legazpi, Light for Cuba"), was organized by local merchants, hospitality workers, sports clubs, the Hotz Legazpi association and members of the Cuban community in Guipúzcoa. The money was transferred to the nonprofit Euskadi‑Cuba, which will oversee the electrification work at the hospital and other Cuban health facilities.

The fundraiser is part of a broader Basque solidarity initiative that previously raised over €180,000 for a solar photovoltaic system at the same hospital’s polyclinic. The William Soler Hospital has been severely affected by Cuba’s ongoing energy crisis, with frequent blackouts compromising pediatric care. Organizers said they will monitor the project’s progress in the coming months.
