Have Faith Haiti orphanage operates amid Port-au-Prince gang violence

Have Faith Haiti, an orphanage in Port-au-Prince run by author Mitch Albom and his wife Janine, continues to provide food, shelter, and education for at-risk children despite extreme gang violence in the capital. The organization aims to provide stability and prepare the next generation of Haitians to lead the country, with 17 graduates having already received scholarships to American universities.

The security situation in the region is critical. Correspondent Anderson Cooper noted that most children at the orphanage have not left the premises for four years due to the danger. Reports indicate that gunshots are frequently heard outside the walls, and students have experienced bullets flying over the orphanage courtyard.

The mission is deeply personal for those involved, including Cooper, whose high school math teacher, Yves Volel—who sought to mobilize support for Haiti and ran for president in 1987—was also a connection to the country's struggle for better leadership.
