Havila Voyages tops NABU cruise sustainability ranking

The German environmental group Naturschutzbund (NABU) placed Norway’s Havila Voyages at the top of its 2026 cruise sustainability ranking, citing the company’s holistic approach to reducing carbon and pollutant emissions along the Norwegian coast. CEO Bent Martini highlighted the 2025 climate‑neutral round‑trip of the Havila Polaris, a 2,500‑nautical‑mile voyage powered by biogas that cut emissions by 95.5 %. Havila aims for fleet‑wide climate neutrality by 2028 and zero‑emission operations by 2030, pursuing alternative fuels, carbon capture and local sourcing to minimise food waste.

NABU’s broader assessment noted that the cruise sector is increasing use of shore power, battery systems and wind‑assist technologies, with several operators improving route planning and hull designs. While Havila and fellow Norwegian line Hurtigruten led the ranking, NABU warned that overall scores remain well below the maximum possible, urging further reductions in heavy‑fuel oil use across the industry.
