Havlíčkův Brod to subsidize cat sterilization to control stray population

The city of Havlíčkův Brod has approved a new sterilization program to address the uncontrolled growth of the stray cat population in the region. Starting January 1, 2027, the municipality will provide financial contributions to residents with permanent residency to help cover veterinary costs for neutering or spaying their cats.

The program offers up to 700 CZK for male cats and up to 1,000 CZK for female cats. The city has initially allocated 200,000 CZK to this fund. Mayor Zbyněk Stejskal stated that sterilization is the only constructive solution to manage the population, improve animal living conditions, and mitigate health and hygiene risks caused by large colonies.

Local animal welfare group Mikeš HB reports that there may be tens of thousands of unmanaged cats in the Havlíčkův Brod district. The group currently sterilizes approximately 500 cats annually, often targeting colonies in abandoned buildings or rural outskirts where food is accessible. Volunteers also work to find homes for kittens that are suitable for domestic life.
