Hawaii Democratic Candidate Kirill Basin Arrested After Beach Brawl

Kirill Basin, a 40‑year‑old Democratic congressional candidate seeking to unseat Rep. Jill Tokuda, was arrested on Aug. 1 following a violent confrontation at Keawakapu Beach in South Kihei, Maui. Police charged him with two counts of first‑degree terroristic threatening after he allegedly threatened a 61‑year‑old beachgoer with a firearm, brandished a knife and threw it into the ocean. The altercation escalated until the man knocked Basin out with a single punch; another intervenor, Kama Homan, also struck Basin after he attempted to attack him with a beach chair.

Basin has prior arrests for assault and property damage and faces multiple restraining orders. Rep. Tokuda condemned the incident, stating, “Violence has no place in our communities or in public service.” The case adds a criminal dimension to Basin’s campaign and may affect the upcoming race.
