Hawaii Motorcyclist Clifford Gouveia Dies After Highway 11 Crash

A 64‑year‑old motorcyclist, Clifford Gouveia of Hilo, died on August 3 after being critically injured in a collision on Highway 11 in Keaau, Hawaii. The crash occurred on July 30 around 7:30 p.m. when a 38‑year‑old driver of a 2013 Honda CRV was rear‑ended by Gouveia riding a 2003 Harley Sportster motorcycle. Police noted Gouveia was not wearing a helmet. He was first taken to Hilo Benioff Medical Center and later air‑lifted to Queen’s Medical Center on Oʻahu, where he succumbed to his injuries.

Police investigators said speed and inattention appeared to be factors. The driver of the Honda and his passenger were unharmed. This incident marks the 21st traffic fatality in Hawaii County for the year, up from 14 at the same point last year. Authorities continue to seek witnesses and information about the crash.
