Hawaii National Guard responds to Hurricane Lowell damage
The Hawaii National Guard has mobilized over 300 active-duty personnel to assist with recovery efforts following Hurricane Lowell, which caused significant damage and power outages across Maui and Kauaʻi.
On Kauaʻi, the Guard has supported community food drives to address supply chain disruptions and shortages in local grocery stores. Personnel have worked alongside organizations like the Hawaii Food Bank to distribute water, meals, and fresh produce to hundreds of residents.
In a critical medical mission, the Guard utilized a CH-47 Chinook helicopter to transport dialysis patients, caregivers, and staff from Kauaʻi to Oʻahu. This emergency evacuation was necessary after power outages disabled local dialysis facilities and disrupted airport operations, preventing the use of commercial flights.
Additional Guard operations include road clearance, search and recovery, and aerial assessments to assist with power restoration and identify distressed individuals. Governor Josh Green noted that the Guard is working in coordination with local emergency management agencies to support the long recovery process.
