Hawaiʻi officials seek federal disaster aid after hurricanes

Hawaiʻi officials are seeking major federal disaster declarations from the White House to provide financial support following back-to-back hurricanes, Lowell and Lala. Governor Josh Green and the state’s congressional delegation have requested assistance for the state and the counties of Kauaʻi and Maui, citing cumulative damage that exceeds local capacity. Hurricane Lowell recently caused significant storm surges and power outages on Kauaʻi, while Hurricane Lala previously caused flooding and utility damage on the Big Island. At least four deaths have been attributed to these storms.

In Kauaʻi, recovery efforts are underway with the opening of disaster recovery resource centers in Hanalei and Kōloa. Local assessments indicate that 10 homes have been destroyed and 64 have suffered major damage. While power has been restored to 81% of the island, water conservation notices remain in effect.

To support the community, Hawaii State Federal Credit Union has expanded its Emergency Member Relief Program, offering assistance loans and payment deferrals. Meanwhile, the Kauaʻi Police Department has issued warnings regarding potential disaster recovery scams targeting residents seeking aid.
