Hawaiʻi police identify 93-year-old woman killed by Hurricane Lala

The Hawaiʻi Police Department has identified 93-year-old May Doi as the first fatality attributed to Hurricane Lala. Doi went missing from her residence in the Nāʻālehu Town Subdivision on Friday, August 14, 2026, before the storm's impact.

Her body was discovered by search crews in a field in the Kaʻū District on Monday afternoon. Preliminary investigations suggest her death was related to the extreme weather and flooding caused by the hurricane, and authorities stated that foul play is not suspected. An autopsy is scheduled to determine the exact cause of death.

Governor Josh Green and Hawaiʻi County Mayor Kimo Alameda surveyed the damage in the southern part of Hawaiʻi island, noting that while flooding caused swollen rivers in Nāʻālehu, Waiohinu, and Pāhala, structural damage to bridges and roads may be less severe than initially feared. Approximately 240 Hawaiʻi National Guard members have been activated to assist with door-to-door wellness checks and debris clearance.
