Hawke's Bay Cancer Centre construction begins in New Zealand
Health Minister Simeon Brown turned the first sod at Hawke’s Bay Fallen Soldiers’ Memorial Hospital, marking the start of construction on the new Hawke’s Bay Cancer Centre. The project, funded with a total of NZ$44.8 million—NZ$37.2 million for Stage One and an additional NZ$7.6 million for Stage Two—will create the region’s first local radiation‑treatment service. A Linear Accelerator (LINAC) machine will enable around 500 patients each year to receive radiation therapy locally, eliminating the current four‑hour round‑trip to Palmerston North. Stage One includes two treatment bunkers and clinical spaces; Stage Two will add modern oncology and haematology facilities. The centre is part of a broader redevelopment of Hawke’s Bay Hospital and aims to reduce travel burdens, improve outcomes, and strengthen the regional health system.
