Hawthorn and Melbourne merger attempt prevented by club members

Thirty years ago, a proposed merger between the Hawthorn Hawks and the Melbourne Demons was announced by the AFL. The league sought to reduce the number of Melbourne-based clubs to facilitate a national competition, following the absorption of Fitzroy by the Brisbane Bears.

At the time, Hawthorn was a dominant force on the field, having won eight premierships over 25 years, but the club faced severe financial instability. With approximately 11,000 financial members, the club was nearly insolvent, risking prosecution for its board members. The AFL offered a $6 million incentive to proceed with the merger, which included a new club jumper and a competitive playing list.

Ultimately, the merger was prevented by member opposition and the leadership of figures such as former Hawthorn captain Don Scott, who played a pivotal role in resisting the move.
