Haydarpaşa Station restoration delayed due to foundation issues

Turkey’s Minister of Culture and Tourism, Mehmet Nuri Ersoy, has announced significant structural findings during the restoration of the historic Haydarpaşa Station in Istanbul. Georadar inspections revealed that approximately 80 percent of the roughly 1,000 wooden piles used in the building’s original 1909 foundation have disappeared over time, with only 200 remaining. Additionally, researchers identified a risk of soil liquefaction due to the loose, water-saturated nature of the ground, which could lead to structural shifting or sinking.

To mitigate these risks, engineers have implemented reinforcement measures, including the installation of fore piles and ground injection techniques. Due to these critical findings and the need for project revisions to protect newly discovered archaeological remains, the completion of the first phase of the restoration has been rescheduled for 2027.

Separately, in Diyarbakır, the 453-year-old Behram Paşa Mosque, an architectural work attributed to Mimar Sinan, remains closed for restoration following the February 2023 earthquakes. Local residents and history enthusiasts are awaiting the completion of the works to allow the site to reopen for worship and cultural tourism.
