Haydarpaşa Terminal restoration sparks controversy over missing wooden piles
The Haydarpaşa Dayanışması group has called for transparency regarding the restoration of the historic Haydarpaşa Terminal. The group is questioning claims made by the Ministry of Culture and Tourism concerning the disappearance of structural wooden piles used in the station's original construction.
According to statements from Minister Mehmet Nuri Ersoy, approximately 1,000 wooden piles were originally used to support the ground. However, recent ground-penetrating radar studies conducted by the Ministry reportedly identified only about 200 piles, leading to the conclusion that 80% of the piles have vanished over time.
Advocates for the terminal argue that the inability to detect the remaining 800 piles via radar does not scientifically prove they have disappeared or decayed. They are demanding that the Ministry release all scientific reports to prove the loss of these historical elements and ensure public accountability during the restoration process.
