Hayden Panettiere death investigation expands as DEA joins probe

An investigation is underway following the death of actress Hayden Panettiere, who was found unresponsive at an Airbnb in Greenville, South Carolina, on August 16, 2026. Panettiere, 36, was discovered in cardiac arrest. Zach Hickerson, the brother of Panettiere's partner Brian Hickerson, reported that they attempted to resuscitate her, with Brian administering Narcan before emergency services arrived.

While local police and the Greenville County Coroner's Office have stated there are currently no signs of foul play or criminal intervention, the U.S. Drug Enforcement Administration (DEA) has joined the investigation. A preliminary autopsy showed no signs of physical trauma, but officials are awaiting toxicology results to determine the official cause of death.

The incident has drawn significant attention due to the history between Panettiere and Brian Hickerson, who has previously been convicted of domestic violence. Panettiere’s mother, Lesley Vogel, has publicly attributed her daughter's death to the influence of a ‘toxic individual.’ Neighbors have also come forward with claims regarding past disturbances and domestic issues at previous residences.
