Hayward Man Arrested for Attempted Murder of Ex‑Girlfriend in Berkeley

Police arrested 19‑year‑old Darius E. Tate of Hayward on suspicion of attempted murder after he shot his 19‑year‑old ex‑girlfriend in the face outside her home on Ashby Avenue in Berkeley on June 14. The victim was flagged down by officers near the Ashby BART station and was taken to a hospital, where she continues to recover.

Tate also stole cash from the victim’s vehicle. Detectives say his mother, 53‑year‑old Ann Fernandez, helped him flee the scene by providing transportation and a change of clothing. Both were later located in San Leandro; Tate was taken into custody at the Santa Rita Jail in Dublin, and Fernandez was held at the same facility. Tate faces charges of attempted murder, robbery, domestic‑violence, illegal possession of a loaded firearm and vehicle tampering, while Fernandez is charged as an accessory.

The investigation involved collection of evidence, witness interviews and surveillance footage, which linked the mother to the suspect’s escape.
