Kalimantan forest fires disrupt flights and threaten wildlife
Severe forest and land fires (karhutla) in Kalimantan have caused significant disruptions to aviation and wildlife safety. In West Kalimantan, Supadio International Airport has seen 73 flights delayed or rescheduled over a three-day period due to visibility dropping to 300 meters. Similarly, Singkawang Airport has faced nearly a month of flight suspensions as visibility remains below safety standards.
In Central Kalimantan, AirNav Indonesia reported that visibility at Tjilik Riwut Airport dropped to 250 meters, halting all flight movements. AirNav officials emphasized that flight decisions are strictly dependent on minimum visibility regulations to ensure safety.
The environmental impact has also severely affected local wildlife. The Borneo Orangutan Survival Foundation (BOSF) reported that 21 orangutans at the Nyaru Menteng conservation area have contracted Acute Respiratory Infection (ISPA) due to the thick smoke. Additionally, an adult male orangutan named ‘Sempurna’ died in Ketapang Regency after suffering from acute respiratory distress.
