Haze impacts air quality in Pekanbaru and Batam

Haze and poor air quality are affecting several regions in Indonesia, specifically Pekanbaru and Batam. In Pekanbaru, air quality has reached ‘very unhealthy’ levels, with PM2.5 concentrations peaking at 226 µg/m³. This environmental condition has prompted the Riau Provincial Government to implement distance learning (PJJ) for high school and vocational students from Wednesday to Friday to mitigate health risks.

In Batam, the air quality is currently categorized as ‘moderate’ with PM2.5 levels recorded at 46.6 µg/m³. While haze is visible across the city, Hang Nadim International Airport reports that flight operations remain normal and safe. Visibility at the airport has been measured at approximately 4,000 meters, which remains above the minimum safety threshold for aviation. Authorities continue to monitor the situation as the haze is expected to persist for several days.
