Sumatra haze triggers distance learning and visibility drops

A massive surge in forest fire hotspots across Sumatra has led to severe haze and deteriorating air quality, prompting widespread educational disruptions. BMKG Pekanbaru reported 5,983 hotspots in the region, with South Sumatra recording the highest concentration at 4,169 points.

In response to the poor air quality, several provinces have implemented distance learning (PJJ) protocols. In West Sumatra, the Education Office has transitioned high school students to remote learning, with specific local policies in Tanah Datar and Bukittinggi affecting various grade levels. In Riau, the Education Office mandated distance learning for high school and vocational students in Pekanbaru from September 16 to 18.

The haze has significantly impacted visibility and public health. In North Sumatra, visibility at several meteorological stations dropped to between 1 and 5 kilometers, while air quality has reached moderate to unhealthy levels. In Riau, visibility in areas like Pekanbaru and Rengat has fallen to approximately three kilometers.
