Haze worsens across Malaysia with unhealthy air quality in 40 areas

Haze conditions have significantly worsened across Malaysia, with approximately 40 areas recording unhealthy Air Pollutant Index (API) levels. Sarawak is among the most heavily affected regions. In Sarawak, Kanowit recorded the highest API of 195, followed by Kuching at 190 and Samarahan at 181. Other locations in the state, including Serian, Betong, Sibu, and Bintulu, have also entered the unhealthy category.

The deteriorating air quality is attributed to smoke from forest and peatland fires in Kalimantan and Sumatra being carried by the Southwest Monsoon winds, alongside local open burning activities. Persistent hot and dry weather has exacerbated the situation by increasing fire risks.

Authorities have advised the public, particularly sensitive groups such as children, senior citizens, and those with respiratory or cardiovascular conditions, to limit prolonged outdoor activities and stay hydrated. API readings between 101 and 200 are classified as unhealthy, while readings above 201 are considered very unhealthy.
