Hazelnut harvest in Camp de Tarragona shows signs of recovery

Farmers in the Camp de Tarragona region are forecasting a recovery in hazelnut production following three years of low yields caused by drought. The Unió de Pagesos (UP) estimates a harvest of approximately 5,000 tons this year, which represents between 70% and 80% of a normal harvest level of 10,000 tons.

Despite the slight recovery, the sector faces significant challenges. Approximately 2,000 hectares of hazelnut trees have been lost in areas irrigated by the Riudecanyes reservoir due to water shortages, resulting in tree deaths and removals. Additionally, the UP has warned of a lack of available phytosanitary products, noting that companies are hesitant to invest in the crop because it is considered a minority cultivation.

To adapt to rising temperatures, farmers have begun planting new, earlier-maturing varieties. While recent heavy rain alerts from Protecció Civil caused concern regarding potential crop damage, the current dry weather is viewed as beneficial for the harvesting process.
