HBCU homecomings drive significant economic impact for local businesses

Historically Black College and University (HBCU) homecoming events are generating substantial economic boosts for their surrounding regions and providing unique opportunities for Black entrepreneurs. The influx of visitors creates demand for various services, including hair styling, clothing, photography, and catering.

Hampton University projected a $3 million economic boost to the City of Hampton and the Coastal Virginia region for its 2024 homecoming, with approximately 25,000 visitors expected. Similarly, Florida A&M University’s 2024 homecoming generated roughly $5.1 million in visitor spending for Tallahassee, Florida.

Beyond direct spending, these events offer long-term visibility for local businesses through social media exposure. When visitors share meals, outfits, or experiences on platforms like TikTok, they provide year-round marketing for the businesses involved.
