HBCU Sports Gains Visibility via Bayou Classic and Federal Grant Bill
The Bayou Classic, now in its 52nd year, is the marquee football rivalry between Grambling State University and Southern University. Held each Thanksgiving weekend in New Orleans, the event has become a cultural anchor for historically Black colleges and universities, featuring high‑profile performances by artists such as GloRilla, Juvenile and 2 Chainz, as well as a battle of the marching bands.
Separately, the Protect College Sports Act – specifically Title III, the Ignite HBCUs Sports and Media Act – proposes a federal grant program to help HBCUs modernize broadband, upgrade production equipment and improve live‑game broadcasts. If funded, the grants would run for two to five years and could support upgrades to TV sets, streaming operations, replay systems and fiber networks, enhancing visibility for HBCU athletics and creating new revenue opportunities.
