HBM Nigeria opens CNG station to reduce transport costs

HBM Nigeria Plc, formerly known as Lafarge Africa Plc, has inaugurated a Compressed Natural Gas (CNG) mother station at its Mfamosing cement plant in the Akamkpa Local Government Area of Cross River. The facility is designed to serve between 130 and 150 trucks daily and is expected to reduce CNG costs by more than 50 per cent.

Group Managing Director and CEO Lolu Alade-Akinyemi stated that the investment aims to improve operational efficiency, reduce energy and logistics costs, and support cleaner energy use. The move is part of a broader growth strategy following the company’s transition to new ownership and its rebranding to HBM Nigeria Plc.

The company is also undergoing significant capacity expansions. The Mfamosing plant, which currently produces five million metric tonnes of cement annually, will soon commission an additional three-million-tonne production line. Furthermore, HBM plans to commission new lines at its Ashaka and Sagamu plants, with the goal of raising its total installed production capacity in Nigeria to approximately 17 million metric tonnes by December.
