HBO and BBC Co‑Produce Tudor Drama Series “1536”

HBO and the BBC are co‑producing a six‑episode drama series titled “1536”. The series adapts award‑winning playwright Ava Pickett’s West End play of the same name and is set in Tudor England, following three working‑class women against the backdrop of Henry VIII’s troubled marriage to Anne Boleyn. It examines how the actions of a powerful man affect the lives of women on the societal margins.

Ava Pickett will serve as showrunner, writer and executive producer. The series is directed by Molly Manners, who also joins as an executive producer. Other executive producers include Jude Liknaitzky, Roanna Benn, Rebecca de Souza, Chloe Beeson (Drama Republic) and Anna Ferguson (BBC). Production is handled by Drama Republic, a Mediawan Group company.

Francesca Orsi, EVP of HBO programming, said the network is “elated to partner with Ava Pickett and the BBC to bring her first television series to life”. Ava Pickett added she is “excited and thrilled” to work with HBO, the BBC and Drama Republic. BBC drama director Lindsay Salt expressed enthusiasm for the collaboration and the chance to bring the story’s “funny, courageous, and iconic female characters” to audiences.
