DC Studios shifts TV slate as Lanterns premieres and other shows are canceled

The DC Universe is seeing significant shifts in its television slate. The series ‘Lanterns’ is set to premiere on HBO and HBO Max on August 16. The eight-episode show, featuring Kyle Chandler as Hal Jordan and Aaron Pierre as John Stewart, follows a grounded, investigative tone described as ‘True Detective with power rings.’ It is the first live-action series developed under the leadership of James Gunn and Peter Safran at DC Studios.

Simultaneously, several other highly anticipated DC projects are reportedly being canceled or stalled. The series ‘Waller,’ intended to star Viola Davis, and the Wonder Woman prequel ‘Paradise Lost’ are no longer moving forward at HBO. Additionally, pitches for Catwoman and Poison Ivy series have been passed on. While ‘Booster Gold’ remains in development, it is reportedly searching for new writers. These changes reflect a narrowing of the initial DCU television roadmap as the studio refines its long-term strategy.
