HBO documentary 'When a Witness Recants' to premiere November 17

The HBO original documentary 'When a Witness Recants', directed by Dawn Porter, is scheduled to debut on November 17 on HBO and HBO Max. The film explores one of the longest combined wrongful conviction cases in United States history.

Set in Baltimore, Maryland, the documentary examines the 1983 murder of a 14-year-old boy at Harlem Park Junior High School. Three local teenagers were arrested, convicted, and sentenced to life in maximum security prisons for the crime, despite being innocent. The film details how coerced confessions and false testimony from witnesses—who later admitted they were pressured as teenagers—led to the convictions.

Executive produced by Ta-Nehisi Coates, who grew up in the same West Baltimore community, the film uses animated sequences and deposition footage to highlight the impact of prosecutorial malfeasance and racially charged police misconduct. The three men were eventually released on November 22, 2019, after serving 36 years. Lauren Lipscomb, chief of the Baltimore State’s Attorney’s Conviction Integrity Division, described the case as 'the most egregious wrongful conviction case in my career.'
