HBO plans ‘The Last of Us’ series finale for Season 3

HBO Chairman Casey Bloys has indicated that the third season of the video game adaptation ‘The Last of Us’ is expected to be the series finale. While a specific release date has not been set, the third season is slated for 2027.

This development suggests a shift in production plans. Previously, showrunner Craig Mazin had expressed uncertainty regarding whether the remaining story could be completed in three seasons or if a fourth would be necessary. Bloys noted that Mazin appears to have planned the third season as the conclusion of the narrative.

The upcoming season is expected to shift focus toward the character Abby, played by Kaitlyn Dever, to complete the adaptation of the second game. This follows the second season's perspective shift, which prepared the story for this transition. The series faces a limited pool of source material as Naughty Dog has not released new installments in the franchise beyond remasters.
