HBO Harry Potter series expected to feature massive budget

HBO is preparing to release a new Harry Potter television series, with production costs expected to rival major hits like 'Game of Thrones' and 'The Last of Us'. Financial reports from the production company Plum Jam Productions suggest that initial costs are exceptionally high, potentially reaching approximately £130.6 million (around €155 million) as the project moves into active production at Warner Bros. Leavesden studios.

Industry estimates suggest the first season could cost roughly £18.8 million per episode. These high upfront expenses are attributed to the construction of lavish sets intended to be used across the seven planned seasons. While per-episode costs may decrease in later years, the initial investment remains significant.

The eight-episode reboot, which adapts 'The Philosopher’s Stone', is scheduled to premiere in December. Showrunner Francesca Gardiner leads the project, and Dominic McLaughlin will take on the title role of Harry Potter. HBO CEO Casey Bloys has expressed high confidence in the series, stating he has seen the season and described it as 'great'.
